HSN/TSN query – Determine vehicle key number

The HSN/TSN query and determination in CATAMA is an indispensable tool for anyone who wants to quickly and easily find out which manufacturer's key number (HSN) or type key number (TSN) belongs to their vehicle and use this information to quickly retrieve the vehicle's master data. The HSN/TSN query allows you to quickly determine the vehicle's basic data, such as its name and manufacturer.

Thanks to the integrated HSN/TSN search in CATAMA vehicle management, you can quickly and easily find the information you need. The data is based on information from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Where can you find the HSN and TSN?

The HSN and TSN numbers can be found on the vehicle registration certificate, Part 1 (vehicle registration document), in fields 2.1 and 2.2. For older vehicles – registered before 2005 – the HSN in field 2 and the TSN in field 3.

What is the vehicle identification number (VIN)?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) consists of the manufacturer's number (HSN) and the type number (TSN). These two numbers are collectively referred to as the VIN or KBA number and can be found in the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugbrief) or vehicle title (Fahrzeugschein) of vehicles registered in Germany.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) issued by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) serves to precisely identify the vehicle type. This number consists of the manufacturer's key number (HSN) and the type key number (TSN).
HSN – Manufacturer's Key Number: 4 digits;
TSN – Type Key Number: 3 digits or letters

What are the advantages of HSN/TSN querying?

The purpose of the HSN/TSN query is to quickly and easily find the correct HSN or TSN for a vehicle. This is particularly important when you want to buy, register, or sell a vehicle.

For some vehicles, field 2.2 only shows the digit "0". In this case, the key number alone is unfortunately insufficient to identify the vehicle. This is because your vehicle is a "re-import". A re-import is a vehicle that was produced for the foreign market and subsequently imported to Germany. Therefore, the key numbers you have cannot be used to find spare parts.

The vehicle manufacturer can be identified using the HSN (German vehicle identification number). There are no restrictions on how many different HSN numbers a manufacturer may use. BMW, for example, uses the numbers 0005, 0575, and 7909.

In addition to the option of retrieving vehicle data via the HSN/TSN query, you can also use the DAT VIN query. This allows you to retrieve all vehicle data, including calculated information on historical purchase and sales prices, as well as equipment features, directly via the CATAMA-DAT interface.
