Mercedes is recalling approximately 10,700 C-Class, E-Class, GLC, and CL models worldwide. Around half – 5,000 vehicles – are registered in Germany. Customers should take their vehicles to their authorized Mercedes-Benz service center as soon as possible; otherwise, they risk engine damage.
A company spokesperson stated the following background information upon request: In the Mercedes models GLC (series 253), CLS (BR 257), C-Class (BR 205), E-Class (BR 213) as well as the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet (BR 238), “individual bolts or chain links of the timing chain” in the four-cylinder diesel engine (OM 654) could wear out in the case of long-term use under specific driving profiles.
According to Mercedes, if the timing chain breaks, there is a risk of engine damage "and a resulting sudden loss of propulsion".
Customers should allow approximately seven hours for replacing the component.
The internal action code “0591016” applies to the production period from January 2016 to February 2021.
