From 2024, new vehicles in the EU will be required to integrate intelligent speed assistance systems (ISA). These systems are designed to intervene when the speed limit is exceeded; alcohol interlocks are also under discussion EU regulation
The recently adopted Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 governs which technical devices new cars must integrate in order to obtain type approval in the European Union. The current regulation includes, among other things, proposals for intelligent speed limiters (ISA), tire pressure monitoring systems, and fatigue warning systems.
In addition to these systems, which are already integrated into many vehicles today, the regulation coming into force in 2024 also prescribes a device for retrofitting an alcohol ignition lock interlock .

The regulations provide for three warning options: cascading tones, cascading vibrations, or haptic feedback via the accelerator pedal. However, speeders can breathe a sigh of relief. While the regulation stipulates that the systems must be automatically activated at the start of every journey, the EU also specifies that the system must not restrict the driver's ability to exceed the speed limit.
The regulation also addresses data protection: the assistants' data must not be made accessible to third parties and should remain within the closed system. However, it remains unclear whether the police are permitted to analyze the data during a check.
