EU decides on the obligation to integrate speed assistance

From 2024, there will be an obligation to integrate intelligent speed assistance (ISA) for new vehicles in the EU. They should intervene if the valid speed limit is exceeded, and alcohol locks are also under discussion the EU regulation

The recently adopted Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 regulates for the European Union which technical devices new cars must integrate in order to be approved in the EU. The current regulation includes among other things: Projects on intelligent speed limiters (ISA), tire pressure monitoring systems and warning systems to detect symptoms of drowsiness.

In addition to these systems, which are already integrated in many vehicles, the regulation that will come into force from 2024 also stipulates a device for retrofitting an alcohol ignition lock .

If the maximum permitted speed is exceeded, for example, the system should first give haptic feedback and exert a kind of counter-pressure against the pedal.

Overall, the set of rules provides for three warning options: cascading tones, cascading vibrations or "haptic feedback via the accelerator pedal". Motor racers can still breathe easy. The regulation stipulates that the systems must be automatically active at the start of each journey. At the same time, however, the EU also stipulates that the system must not restrict the driver's ability to drive faster than permitted.

The regulation also addresses the issue of data protection: the data of the assistants must not be made accessible to third parties and should remain in the closed system. However, it remains unclear whether the police can evaluate the data as part of a check.
