Mercedes recall - Thousands of diesel engines get a new timing chain

Mercedes is recalling a good 10,700 Mercedes C and E-Class as well as GLC and CL models worldwide. Around half – 5,000 vehicles – are registered in Germany. Customers should return the vehicles to their authorized workshop as soon as possible, otherwise there is a risk of engine damage.

A company spokesman gave the background on request on record: For the Mercedes models GLC (253 series), CLS (257 series), C-Class (205 series), E-Class (213 series) and the E-Class coupe and - Convertible (BR 238) "in the case of long-term use under specific driving profiles, individual pins or chain links of the timing chain" in the four-cylinder diesel engine (OM 654) could wear out.

According to Mercedes, if the timing chain breaks, there is a risk of engine damage “and a resulting sudden loss of propulsion”.

Customers should plan around seven hours to change the component.

The internal promotional code "0591016" is valid for the production period from January 2016 to February 2021.
