Mercedes is recalling approximately 10,700 Mercedes C-Class, E-Class, GLC, and CL models worldwide. About half of these—5,000 vehicles—are registered in Germany. Customers should take their vehicles to an authorized service center as soon as possible; otherwise, there is a risk of engine damage.
In response to an inquiry, a company spokesperson provided the following background information: For the Mercedes GLC (model series 253), CLS (model series 257), C-Class (BR 205), E-Class (BR 213), as well as the E-Class Coupé and Cabrio (BR 238), “in the event of long-term use under specific driving profiles, individual bolts or links of the timing chain” in the four-cylinder diesel engine (OM 654) could wear out.
According to Mercedes, if the timing chain breaks, there is a risk of engine damage “and a sudden loss of propulsion as a result.”
Customers should allow about seven hours for the replacement of the part.
