New Federal Government to Expand the Electric Vehicle Industry

One of the goals set by the new federal government is to modernize German climate policy. Chancellor Scholz views the expansion of the electric vehicle market as a central pillar of this policy. The number of electric passenger cars is expected to increase dramatically.

The three governing parties had already reached an agreement during the election campaign. The expansion of electric vehicle use was to become a central focus of the new “traffic light” coalition government. Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated this point in his first policy address to the Bundestag on Wednesday: “In the coming years, we will ensure that mobility becomes simpler, more convenient, and more climate-friendly, while remaining affordable for everyone.”

In addition to the “Expansion and Modernization Pact” aimed at improving local rail transit, Scholz also made a clear commitment to Germans’ favorite mode of transportation: the car

“Many people enjoy driving, and that’s how it should stay.” However, vehicle powertrains must finally become climate-friendly.

Scholz therefore set a goal of registering approximately 15 million additional electric vehicles on German roads by 2030.

Although passenger car sales are currently somewhat weaker, the target set is certainly realistic given the strong growth of the electric vehicle market at the same time.
